African American Archives
African American Archives provides over one million pages of original historical documents pertaining to the African American experience over several centuries, and is richly-detailed with narratives and quantitative data alike.

African American Biographical Database
Biographical sketches of African American activists, business people, former slaves, performing artists, educators, lawyers, physicians, writers, church leaders, homemakers, religious workers, government workers, athletes, farmers, scientists, factory workers, and more–both the famous and the everyday person.

The African American Historical Serials Collection
Features 173 periodicals spanning from 1816 through 1922. The periodicals in this collection include newspapers and magazines, in addition to reports and annuals from various African American organizations, including churches and educational and service institutions.

African American Poetry (1750-1900)
The early history of African American poetry, from the first recorded poem by an African American (Lucy Terry Prince’s “Bars Fight,” c. 1746) to the major poets of the nineteenth century, including Paul Laurence Dunbar and Frances Ellen Watkins Harper.

Biography and Genealogy Master Index

Black Studies Center
This is a leading tool that supports research, teaching, and learning in Black Studies and other disciplines that benefit from a more detailed coverage of the black experience such as history, literature, political science, sociology, philosophy, and religion.

Black Studies Center Dissertations
Contains a thousand doctoral dissertations and Masters’ theses examining a wide variety of topics and subject areas relating to Black Studies. Included are dissertations written between 1970 and 2004 at over 100 universities and colleges across the United States. These dissertations were selected for their relevance to Black Studies scholars.

Black Studies Center History Makers Oral History Videos
Contains videos and full transcripts for interviews with 100 contemporary African Americans.

The full text backfile of six influential black Newspapers: Atlanta Daily World (1931-2003); Chicago Defender (1910-1975); Daily Defender (1956-1975); Los Angeles Sentinel (1934-2005); New York Amsterdam News (1922-1994); Pittsburgh Courier (1911-2002).

This reference site contains more than 10,000 articles by top scholars in the field. The core content includes the full-text of Africana, Encyclopedia of African American History, 1619-1895, Encyclopedia of African American History, 1896 to the Present, Black Women in America, African American National Biography, as well as other reference works.

Art, Music & Dramatic Arts:

Black Studies Center
This is a leading tool that supports research in Black Studies, offering unique coverage of art and music journals not typically indexed elsewhere. For example, in the visual arts, full-text of The International Review of African American Art and African arts are covered. A fantastic resource for anyone doing research in the arts and the African American experience.

Fine Arts and Music Collection
With hundreds of full-text magazines and journals, this collection will provide students with resources to support research in areas such as drama, music, art history, and filmmaking. Though other TSU databases are better for Fine Art (and for Arts students you may have to click on the PDF button to the right to get the images), this collection from Gale has some popular music and theatre journal titles not found elsewhere, such as Down Beat.

Naxos Music Library 
Music database containing over 140,000 tracks of music, including the entire Naxos label. Most of the collection is classical, but the database also includes jazz, world, new age, and some pop and rock. Labels included in addition to Naxos are Chandos, Caprice, Wergo, CPO, Hungaraton, and more.

OmniFile Full Text Mega (H.W. Wilson)
This multidisciplinary database will be of particular interest for artists and art students as it offers coverage of popular art magazines AND provides PDFs of the pages. Lots of other databases say they are “full text,” but they don’t give you images–just the text. In OmniFile, you will find popular titles such as: American Artist, ARTnews, Art in America, ArtForum, Southwest Art, Ceramics Review, Ceramics Monthly, and  Print, along with academic journal titles of interest to those studying and teaching art at the college level.
