CIRCULATION/RESERVE DEPARTMENT

The Circulation/Reserve Department is located on the first floor near the entrance. Books and reserve materials  are checked out and checked in at the Circulation/Reserve Desk.  Additional responsibilities of the staff include receiving and processing reserve materials, processing overdue and lost books, shelving books, and registering and updating patrons in the circulation module.  Texshare cards are also processed in this department.

FAQs

Who can borrow materials? Texas Southern University enrolled students with a current TigerOne card and a current class schedule may borrow books from the circulating collections and the reserve collection, as well as the Heartman Paperback Collection. Faculty and staff may borrow books with a current TigerOne card.

What materials may be borrowed? Books from the circulating collections and from the Heartman Paperback Collection.

What materials do not circulate? Journals, newspapers, media, theses and dissertations, reference materials, microforms, and Heartman Collection materials.

How long can materials be kept when borrowed? Students may keep borrowed materials, from the circulating collections, for two (2) weeks, and may be renewed once for two (2) additional weeks – unless requested by another patron. Near the end of each semester or summer term, shorter lending periods may be in effect. Faculty and staff may borrow materials for a month, with one (1) renewal unless requested by another patron. Materials may be renewed in person or online by logging in to My Account. The total number of books that a student can check out at one time from the general collection is 15.

Where are the reserve materials?  Materials such as books, articles, media (CDs, DVDs, etc.) are placed on reserve by faculty and library staff to support the university curriculum and instructional programs.  These materials (with the exception of media) are kept in the Circulation/Reserve Department. All media materials will be found in the Learning Resource Center on the third floor. The resources may be personal copies of the professors or Terry Library owned titles. Reserve materials circulate within the library for two (2) hours.

How much are fines for overdue books? Circulating collection titles – $.25 per day per book. Reserve materials – $1.00 per hour (maximum $10.00 per day, per item). Lost materials are billed at replacement cost, plus a $20.00 processing fee. Fines  are paid in theBursar’s Office in the Bell Building between the hours of 8:00 am — 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday. The paid receipt must be brought in to the Circulation/Reserve Desk to remove the fines from the patron’s record.

What is a TexShare Card? TexShare (Texas Library Resource Sharing Program) is a network of academic, public, and health center libraries. Students, faculty and staff, who are eligible, can be issued a TexShare card.  This card allows the holder borrowing privileges at TexShare participating libraries within the state. Borrowers are responsible for returning all books to the lending library and are responsible for all fines incurred.

Who is eligible? Students, faculty and staff who are in good standing with the Terry Library are eligible to receive a TexShare card as part of Robert James Terry Library’s participation in the state-wide TexShare Resource Sharing Program. Applications are available at the Circulation/Reserve Desk.

 

Texas Southern University Circulation Policies for TexShare Library Card Holders from TexShare Libraries:

Identification: University identification cards, along with a TexShare Card are required to borrow materials.

What materials circulate: Books from the General Collection may be borrowed for a two (2) week period, with one (1) renewal.

Number of books which can be borrowed: A total of four (4) books can be checked out per borrower.

Renewals: Only in-person renewals are accepted. One (1) renewal is allowed, if there is not a hold or recall on the material.

Returns: Borrowers are responsible for returning materials by the due date. Borrowers are encouraged to return materials in person. If it is not possible, items should be returned by first class mail. Recalls: All items are subject to recall. If an item is recalled, the recall date replaces the original due date.

Non-circulating Materials: Reference materials, journals, special collection materials, government documents, media, microforms, theses and dissertations.

Bills: Charges for over-due materials – $1.00 per day, per book. Lost books incur the price of the book + $15.00 processing fee. Outstanding fines and other charges are payable upon receipt of invoice.
